Right now I’m a full time student (and dreading the job market), but in the past I’ve done freelance writing/editing/design, worked at a veterinary office answering phones and taking samples of dog poop (yup), and worked as a counselor/tour guide for Italian and Turkish students in Boston. The latter job was by far my most interesting/fun/terrifying job to date, and if you click the “Boston” label on the sidebar to your left you can read all about that. I’m constantly on the alert for the thing I want to do for the rest of my life… but I don’t think I’ve found it yet.
I’m an English major, creative writing minor, and an [aspiring] poet. I’m currently working on a semester-long project that entails writing a manuscript of poetry, editing that manuscript, and submitting my poems to various literary journals and contests – and that takes up almost all of my time! It’s basically my idea of the perfect semester: getting to devote long hours to writing, editing, and reading in my little single room while drinking plenty of black coffee. When I’m not on task, though, I also love to watch – I’m not afraid to admit it! – trashy reality TV shows (my favorite right now: Kell on Earth) and lots and lots of movies. I mean lots. Most notably, I have strong, inexplicable adoration for the Cohen brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and Mary-Kate Olsen (a peculiar bunch, I know).
Luckily, my boyfriend Corey loves movies as much as I do; it’s probably one reason we’ve been together for the last three years. I met Corey during second semester of my freshman year and have been happily with him ever since. He’s an actor, a drama major and creative writing minor, a comedian, and maker of hilarious movies (some of which you can see here). He never fails to cheer me up and get me out of my own head, and I’m forever grateful to him for that. I can’t imagine what the last three years would’ve been like without him.
I’m also fortunate enough to have two amazing parents and several wonderful, lifelong friends, all of whom, though they are not nearby, manage to help and support me in more ways than I can explain. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but I’m learning more and more that it’s important to hold on to the people who truly encourage and sustain you. Life has been a little rough lately (though I’m sorry to be mysterious, I don’t tend to write about family matters on my blog!), and I couldn’t be more thankful for these people. Oh, and I’m also thankful for my dog, Spike. I’ve gotten through more melancholy by going for walks and snuggling with him than I care to admit, so he also counts as one of my favorite people!
Some of my other loves include comfy jeans, drawing, letter-writing, beer (the darker the better), horseback riding (and grooming/mucking out stalls/being in a barn, period), Scrabble (I’m an English major, after all), and spending more time online than I should. I’m a rebel that way.
